THE DEPUTY

TRAVELLING FOR OTHERS. We hear much in these days of the young people who lack initiative and grit, so it is pleasant for a change to meet. Mr Jim Brown, of Detroit, in the United States. After trying many jobs, ho now follows one of the queerest of ail occupations. He is for ever travelling round the world, and all ho has to do is to take photographs and write accounts of what he sees, or of his experiences. Simple and pleasant as all this sounds, it is in reality sheer hard work. Mr Brown does not do this for a newspaper. He does it for boys and girls who pay him two pounds to act as their deputy. A boy or girl, or a group of Scouts, or ti school class may say io him: “Mr Brown, we would love to travel in South America, but we cannot leave home at. present. Will you go for us, sending us photographs and letters so that we may follow' you in your travels, and share your adventure?"

To this Mr Brown agrees, and off he goes. A month or two ago he was in Durban with his camera and typewriter, and we may be sure he will not stay very long, for he has to keep moving. He keeps his part of the bargain very faithfully, sending his youthful employers pictures of the lands through which he travels, accounts of scenery and customs, and notes of any discoveries he makes. He made his first voyage in 1934; and is to be greatly admired for his enterprise.
