OFFICIAL HERD TEST
PAST SEASON'S PERFORMANCES. Returns, as supplied by the Dairy Division, Department of Agriculture, for the pedigree Friesians tested under ' Government 0.1-I.T. during the .1938-39 season show that twenty-three breeders submitted either the whole or part of their pedigree Friesian herds for testing during the season. i Although the greater part of the season was not conducive to high yields [.some excellent performances under or- ; dinarv herd conditions were recorded i Dy the 396 cows tested. | The outstanding herd for the season was the “Lauderdale" herd of 38 cows, owned by R. H. Dickie. Tuturau. Southland, which returned the remarkable average of 11.228.81 b milk and 412.271 b. fat in 26,3 days. Two herds which did particularly well in areas which were greatly affected by the drought experienced during the summer and autumn of the season under review were the "Longbeach" herd owned by J. H. Grigg. Longbeach, Canterbury, in which 16 cows averaged 9219.51 b. milk and 357.74 j lb. fat in 285 days and the "Turepo" 1 herd ov?ned by C. A. Knutson, Dale-1 field. Wairarapa, in which 30 cows rveraged 9686.31 b. milk and 352.281b.' fat in 276 days. Perhaps the outstanding performer j of the seasan is C. A. Knutson's junior 3-year-old. Ahikouka Colantha I 1 obes, whose record of 523.131 b. fat in 284 days is not only the highest for any 3-year-cld for 1938-39 but it is also the highest record yet made by any junior 3-year-old Friesian heifer under G.O.H.T. This | heifer, who won the 2-year-old and 3-1 year-old heifer classes at the 1927 and | 1938 Royal Shows respectively, and produced 6731 b. fat as a junior 2-year-old under C.O.R. test is sired by Ahikouka Judge Beets while her darn is Ahikouka Colantha Pontiac.
