These exist in the relationships which are closely woven between the Royal Families of the three countries by means of which Denmark once gave Britain a queen and England gave Norway one. The late Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII. of England, was the eldest daughter of King Christian IX. of Denmark, the present King of Denmark’s father, and H.R.H. Princess Maud, who married King Haakon VII. of Norway' in 1898, was Queen Alexandra’s daughter. Queen Maud of Norway, whose death occurred suddenly in November. 1938. was much beloved not only in Norway but also in England, where she was a frequent visitor. Queen Alexandrine of Denmark is the daughter of the Grand Duke Friedrich Franz 111. of MecklenburgSchwerin and his wife, the Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia.
