FIERCE FIGHTING
SEA AND LAND ACTIONS IN NORWAY NAZI GARRISONS HEMMED IN. BRITISH ATTACK ON TRONDHEIM. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON. April 12. Since a description yesterday by the First Lord, Mr Churchill, in the House of Commons of the naval actions that had been completed up to that time, the Admiralty had said nothing further about naval operations, but the indications are that the sea warfare is continuing and a battle is still in progress off Trondheim. Both German and neutral sources state that Allied naval units are in action in that area. A report from, Stockholm about the activities in the Skagerrak and Kattegat support the earlier message that the Germans suffered heavy losses. Hundreds of bodies have been seen in the sea. The Norwegian garrisons have rallied with great spirit and from strong posts inland have harried the Germans. The garrison at Narvik is ringed on the inland side by Norwegian troops. Bergen is held by German troops estimated at 2000, and an attempt to sally out was repulsed by the Norwegians. The Germans are advancing from Oslo on the north and the east. On the east a big battle is expected at Kongsvinger. Near Hamar the Germans have been thrown back five miles south of the towm There has been fierce fighting at Elverum and severe air attacks. • Opinions that the German moves in Norway and Denmark are only a feint to cover moves elsewhere have been given point by growing uneasiness seen in other neutral European States, including the Netherlands.
