Narrow Win for Merry Vaals. The favourite, Merry Vaals, scored narrowly in a hard finish in the Stewards' Handicap at the Whangarci Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday, registering his first success in open company. Trilliarch led into the straight from Corato who had run very fast. Corato soon shook off Trilliarch and appeared certain to win. However, he tired badly in the last chain and Merry Vaals got up to beat him by a head. Aero King who fought on solidly was a neck away third and Trilliarch was fourth, followed by Very Glad and Brazilian. Corato appeared unlucky as he made up his ground very rapidly after being slow to move. Aero King indicated that he is returning to form by running a good third.
A Decisive Win. The each-way favourite Jack Tar scored decisively in the Mclnnes Memorial Hand’,cap at the Whangarei meeting yesterday. Namara appeared to catch the tapes and lost a lot ot ground. Silver Cloud assumed command at the top and she led into the straight from Jack Tai'. Rarotonga. Clipper and Tybalt. Soon after reaching the straight Jack Tar challenged and he came on to win by threequarters of a length from Silver Cloud, who defeated Raepata by a length and a half. Ivy Willonyx was fourth, followed by Clipper, Namara and Rarotonga. Jack Tar ran right up to his best. form, and Silver Cloud fought on well even though the winner had her beaten about a furlong from the post. Raepata came from a fair way back for third. Ivy Willonyx and Clipper ran creditable races, and Namara did well enough to indicate that ho might have been dangerous with an even jump out.
Filling the Fields. War-time racing will owe much to the support of Miss Dorothy Paget. For the 37 fiat races which closed just before the mail left England she has made 93 entries. Sixteen hurdle races and steeplechases have just closed, and 33 of Miss Paget's horses have been entered for them. Entry fees and minor forfeits for these amount to £315. The most expensive race among them is the Liverpool Spring Cup, for which the entrance is usovs, with an extra ssovs if left in after March 26. Miss Paget has five in this race —Solford. Walter Merry. Jubilee Day, Cavalry King, and Fairfax. The last-nam-ed is also in the Lincolnshire Handicap. Of the 63 entries made at 2sovs each for the Orange Plate, for two-year-olds. at Hurst Park, eight belong to Miss Paget. None of these has yet received a name. Site has also nominated seven of thorn and one other for the Lincoln Plate (33 entries) to be run the following week;
An Unlucky Owner. Since Mr F. C. Christie has taken over the stables at Orari racecourse he has experienced some misfortune with his horses. Montessa. winner of the New Zealand Oaks last November, suffered a broken log through being kicked, and is now in a sling, in the hope ilial she may be saved for slud purposes. Ono of the two-year-olds by Irish Lancer, bought by Mr Christie at the Wingatui sale in February, was severely injured by running foul of a fence, and is not expected to be able Io race.
Profitable Purchase. A bargain was secured when Mr W. J. Smith paid 3300 guineas for the Son-in-Law horse Beau Pere. Fourteen yearlings by Beau Pere made 14,550 guineas at the Sydney sales, including the top-price colt of the sale, who made 3500 guineas. Mr .Smith recently returned from a visit to California, and after seeing Beaulivre run in the All-Aged Plate at Randwick made an offer of 5000 guineas for him. If the offer is accepted, it is Mr Smith's intention to send Beaulivre, who cost his present owner 2900 guineas, to California.
