HINTS FOR THE AMATEUR
Fruit, Flowers and Vegetables WORK FOR THE WEEK VEGETABLE GARDEN. Plant out cabbage and cauliflower for spring supplies. Remove any spent crops and dig over the ground roughly if not required for planting. Store the marrows and pumpkins when fully ripe; dry well before storing, away. Sow onions for transplanting later, also parsley for use in spring. Sow early horn carrots, turnips, prickly spinach and beet. Plant out silver beet from the earlier sowings and make another sowing for later crops. Sow seeds at this season of year in raised beds if the soil is likely to be wet in winter. j - — FRUIT GARDEN. Give an application of lime to the peaches and nectarines; this should be done at least once in three years. As soon as the crop of outdoor grapes has been picked, give a good application of blood and bone or farm manure. t Insert cuttings of gooseberries and currants. Plant out strawberries as soon as the plants can be procured. Late tomatoes should be picked as soon as they show colour to prevent the fruits cracking. Take stock of any failures in the fruit with a view to replacement during the coming planting season. FLOWER GARDEN. Where the dahlias have been cut down by frost the tubers should be lifted and dried. Chrysanthemums are developing their buds fast; keep the cut-flower section well disbudded for the best results. Cease the feeding when the chrysanthemums show colour. The planting ot narcissus bulbs should be completed as soon as possible. Plant anemone and ranunculus corms in a well-drained position. Plant Iceland poppies, stocks, calendula, carnations and antirrhinum for spring flowering. Cut down herbaceous plants which have finished their season and do any transplanting of these subjects required.
