GENEROUS ACTION

P. AND T. DEPARTMENT OFFICERS WAR CONTRIBUTION MADE FROM SALARIES. MINISTER'S EXPRESSION OF GRATITUDE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. _ An announcement that officers of Iho Post anti Telegraph Department were making voluntary subscriptions totalling between C5OOO and TfillOf) annually to the National and Provincial Patriotic Funds was made yesterday by Ihe Postmaster-Gen-eral, Ah- Jones. ! "Officers of the department, realising the need for sustained effort in support of the patriotic funds, have asked the department to deduct from their salaries each fortnightly pay-day varying sums of money which will be donated to the funds." Mr Jones said. "The annual total of the voluntary subscriptions will be between £5OOO and £6OOO. The money will be allocated on the basis of one-third distributed among the 11 provincial patriotic funds and two-thirds to the National Patriotic Fund. The first deduction on account of the patriotic contributions was made from salaries paid on April 4. "This is a magnificent gesture." said Mr Jones, "and, bearing in mind that the individual fortnightly contribution does not press unduly heavily on any contributor, it serves to show what can be achieved in the way of combined and sustained effort by large staff’s. It is hoped that other staffs will follow Ihe splendid lead given by officers of the Post Office."' Mr Jones said that the assistance given to the war effort by officers of the Post and Telegraph Department was by no means confined to financial aid. To date, more than 800 postal officers had volunteered for service with the defence forces.
