MR. ROOSEVELT

THIRD TERM AT WHITE HOUSE. Ono of the best appraisals of the question of a third term for President Roosevelt at the White House is by the Louisville ■■Courier-Journal," a Democratic paper which has loyally backed the New Deal. It says:—There, are three reasons why ardent supporters of Mr Roosevelt may find a third term undesirable. The first reason is that if he were again a candidate the campaign would be both bitter and trivial. The bitterness would be ." vicious'personal bitterness. At a critical moment in world history the American people would 'waste a couple of months arguing whether Mr Roosevelt wants to be a dictator, whether he has megalomania, or whether his children make too much money or have too many divorces. The second reason is that if Mr Roosevelt were re-elected he would find himself the President of an angry, divided country. Al! this would happen at a moment when Western civilisation might be imperilled. The third and least, weighty reason is that the United States is bored with arguing about Mr Roosevelt. The country deserves a rest from its eight-year-long acrimony over F.D.R. In retirement he can be the force for Liberalism for high-mindedness in public life, which] he could not be as a third term Presi-I dent.
