WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

, MEETING AT ALFREDTON. COMPETITION WINNERS. ("Times-Age” Special.) There was a fair attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Alfredton Women's Institute when Mrs. S. Edmonds presided. The Ode of Friendship was sung and the prayer for peace read. Members stood lor a few moments in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Prime Minister (Mr M. J. Savage). It was decided to send away each month two parcels for soldiers and alsoto make clothes for Finnish refugee children. The competitions resulted as follow: Best bloom, Mrs. Weston (rose) 1. Mrs. G. Napier (African daisy) 2, Mrs. Dickens (chrysanthemum) 3; root vegetable. Mrs. Didsbury (carrot), 1, Mrs. Didsbury (parsnip) 2. Mrs. Ciee (red beet) 3; scones, Mrs Dickens 1, Mrs S. Edmonds 2. Mrs. Clarkson 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Rolls. Hutchings and Payne. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. TINUI MEETING. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. The ninth birthday of the Tinui Women's Institute was celebrated recently in the Tinui Hall, when there was a good attendance. A very nice cake was made by Miss D. Groves for the occasion. The candles were 1 lit by Mrs Johnson and blown out by Mrs Street. The competition for the year resulted: —Sewing and cooking. Mrs Carmen. Best bloom. Miss S. Atack. The next meeting will be held on May 2, when the hostesses will be Mrs Carmen. Mrs Miles and Miss French. The competitions will be: Best bloom, baby's vest, eggless ginger broad.
