The plucky action of a student at the Southland Boys’ High School was recognised when T. M. Cushen, aged 17. son of Mr J. A. Cushen. headmaster of the North School, was presented with a wristlet watch by Dr G. H. Uttley before the assembled students. During the Easter holidays Cushen was one of a camping party at Oreti. Several boys were bathing in the river and one of them got into difficulties in deep water. Without hesitation Cushen jumped in and went to his rescue. The boy struggled and Cushen was dragged under. He managed to fight free, caught the other boy by the hair, and dragged him to the bank. There he and another boy applied artificial respiration. Details of the rescue are being collected and will be forwarded to a representative of the Royal Humane Society in Dunedin.
