FOR THE HOUSEWIFE
HINTS WORTH NOTING. Renew the frayed edges of a rug by putting a strong blind cord along the worn margins and working over it several times with heavy wool that is in colour harmony with the rug. When making egg sandwiches, use scrambled instead of hard-boiled eggs. Avoid excessive moisture. Pads for polishing shoes lose their softness after a time. If pieces of velvet from discarded jackets have been kept, it is easy to recover the pad. Bits of velvet are also useful for polishing furniture. Velvet is too useful to be thrown away. When a pumpkin is too large for one meal, rub bicarbonate of soda into the cut surface of the remaining portion and it will keep quite fresh for some considerable time. When eggs are either dear or scarce, add a dessertspoon of vinegar and just one egg to a large plain cake, for which three eggs would be required.
To prevent the leaves of a tightlyrolled lettuce from tearing, simply hold the lettuce under running water for a few minutes.
