SCRAP METALS
SCHOOL COLLECTION PROPOSED, PATRIOTIC FUND EFFORT. “The Minister of Education has given, approval to a proposal of the National Patriotic Fund Board to launch a cam-, paign for the collection of non-ferrous metals on a nation-wide basis," states a memorandum sent to education boards and governing bodies of schools by Mr G. A. Hayden, secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board. "The primary purpose of this collection is to augment the National Patriotic Fund. Lead, brass and copper are in. somewhat short supply in industry today, and this collection, it is believed, will be of assistance in our industrial fields of activity. “As a means of accomplishing this aim. the co-operation of the children in primary and secondary schools is considered to be essential. With the help of the children in schools, the whole country could be covered and it is thought that the schools themselves would furnish the best places to hold the metals for collection later. "The collection would be made of one metal at a time for a period of a fortnight. A beginning could be made with a ‘lead fortnight,’ to be followed by ’fortnights' for brass and copper. Each metal collected would be kept separate, thus eliminating the costs of classification by the merchants, to whom the metals will ultimately be sent. The collection of metals from schools will be arranged by the National Patriotic Fund Board. “The National Patriotic Fund Board feels that any competition between classes or schools should be discouraged, and that children should be required ’to secure their parents or friends’ consent to contribute pieces of scrap metal. This practical form of patriotism should appeal to teachers, parents and pupils. “I should be pleased to learn thaft your board is agreeable to this propc / sal. and that the Headmasters of th i schools under your control will be asked to co-operate in this two-fold service."
