PICTURES FOR NATION
LORD ROTHERMER’S GIFT. DISPERSING A COLLECTION. Viscount Rolhermere has decided to disperse his private collection of paintings. He has cabled from Egypt announcing this, and asking a fellow collector to offer throe pictures from the collection to Sir Kenneth Clark for the National Gallery. He doos not specify which particular works are to be offered, but indicates that further gifts may follow. “The choice of the throe.” it was stated, “may be left largely to Sir Kennth." Forty years have gone to the building of Lord Rothermere's collection, in which the Italian Old Masters are particularly well represented. Fifteen pictures, from it have recently been cn loan to a national exhibition in Budapest. About three years ago Lord Rothermere gave three paintings from the collection to Kilburn Parish Church, London, in memory of his mother, with whom ho had. as a lad, often worshipped there. Another picture, a Bellini, showing the Madonna and two saints and valued at £lO.OOO. he presented to the Slipper Chapel at Walsingham about, a year ago.
