OBSERVERS PUZZLED
SOVIET FAR EASTERN FORTIFICATIONS VERITABLE MAGINOT LINE IN ASIA. WORK BEING PUSHED AHEAD FEVERISHLY. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. NEW YORK, April 7. The “New York. Times” Far Eastern correspondent, Mr Hallett Abend, at Shanghai, says: “Observers are puzzled by news that along the 3000-mile Siberian Manchukuo frontier coincident with the spring thaw the Russians are feverishly connecting the existing widely-spaced concrete pillboxes with concreted trenches, and underground passages, resulting in a veritable Maginot Line in Eastern Asia. "Some observers conjecture that this indicates that a military development can be expected in the Near East and Balkans for which reason the Russians are securing their frontiers against surprise Japanese attacks, but the Japanese involvement in China makes this improbable. Others interpret it as a sign that the Soviet intends to attack Japan while its army remains in the miro of China.”
