TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Black Thread and Amigo FORM IN RECENT RACING (BY "THE GRAFTER.”) Amigo, which has reached the stage where he has to carry too much weight in sprint races for comfort, was tried out successfully over a mile and a quarter in the Feilding Cup. He attempted to repeat the success over a mile and a distance in the Goodbehere Memorial on the second day, but found 9.6 too much of a burden and was beaten by Footloose. Now a four-year-old, Amigo, is a brown gelding by Beau Pere from Adorable, a Limond mare which had not previously produced any horse of note. Amigo has previously scored two other wins this season, but from now on he will be faced with stiff tasks over whatever distance he is tried. He is trained by his owner-breeder, Mr L. G. Paul, at Wanganui. Black Thread, the outstanding sprinter at the Auckland Easter carnival, first;came into prominence a couple of seasons ago when he had a number of jsmart sprint victories. His later form was not up to standard and it is only this season that he has really lived up to his early promise. The Easter Handicap, a mile race, is the richest handicap during the holiday period and Black Thread defeated the Trentham Thompson Handicap winner, Kathbella, by half a head. Carrying 9st 81b he made a grand effort in the six furlongs Huia Handicap on the second day, but the lightly-weighted Blonde Princess beat him home by a head. A seven-year-old brown gelding, he is by Mimetic from Slipstitch, being trained at Gisborne by J. W. Nixon for Mr D. G, Barry, Mimetic, an Australian-bred horse by Comedy King from Joyeuse, by Bayardo, was imported by Mr A. B. Williams, but he did not get many chances at the stud, and died in 1934- He was a brother to Joy King, while his dam was a half-sister to Ronsard, sire of Rivette, winner of the last Melbourne Cup. Slipstitch was bred in England in 1913, being by Henry the First. In addition to Black Thread she produced winners in Lockstitch and Threadneedie, and Drop One, dam of Malagigh

Classform was the unlucky runner at Ellerslie, as besides her second in the Calcs she beat all but Yogi in the mile and a half Nolan Handicap. It was no disgrace to be overhauled in the final furlong by Yogi, a smart staying three-year-old by Beau Pere. Trained by her breeder, Mr C. W. Boyd, at Awapuni, Classform is by Inflation from Spearform, a stoutly-bred Greyspear mare from whom her daughter probably derives her stamina, as Inflation. a Paper Money horse, was a sprinter. Since she graduated to open company, Classform has won the Rangitikei. Cup and the King George Handicap at the Manawatu meeting. More successes should come her way. Offer for Beaulivre Refused. The All-Aged Plate at Randwick had more far-reaching effects than the mere success of Ajax over the three-year-olds High Caste and Beaulivre. Not only did it mean that Ajax will be raced while there is no likelihood of his stud value being impaired, but Beaulivre’s display impressed Mr W. J. I Smith so much that he offered Mr C.j E. Harnett, the colt's owner, 5000 guin-( eas for him, with a view to sending Beaulivre to America to race. Mr Harnett declined to sell.
The Oaks Winner. Foxmond was seen in a now role when she contested the Groat Northern Oaks successfully, as previously the Foxbridge—Volimond filly a black in colour, had done most of her racing over sprint distances, having failed to get on the winning list since her entry into the open class ranks some months ago. With owners breeding for an allround type of horse capable of showing form from sprint distances up to a mile and a half, there is a tendency for riders in a race of this type to give their horses an exercise gallop over tne early stages and then sprint home. The Oaks is reported to have been .run at a particularly muddling pace over the first six furlongs and this undoubtedly was to the advantage of Foxmond which defeated Classform by a neck, The three-year-olds by Foxbridge, headed by Proud Fox, are building up a good record this season. Volimond. dam of Foxmond, was bred at the Koatanui stud in 1925, being by Limond from Tivoli, by Absurd from Roscommon (imp.) by Common.
Trotting Two-year-olds. A race for two-year-old pacers and trotters, instituted by the Now South Wales Trotting Club, was decided in Sydney recently. The prize was £5OO, of which £3OO was allocated to the pacers, and £2OO to the trotters' section. Both divisions were won by juveniles sired by Walla Walla. 2min 2 2-5 sec, which was given a great reception at Addington when ho defeated the •best horses in New Zealand in the first of a series of match races staged in the Dominion. Prejudice won the pacers' division, in 2min 17 3-ssec for the mile. This is a record in Australia for her age over eight furlongs, the previous best being 2min 18sec. accomplished by Wilmer Dillon at Goulburn last year. Judged by these standards the two-year-olds in the Commonwealth are not nearly as brilliant as those bred in the Dominion. The New Zealand record is 2mih 10 4-ssec, established by Walter Moore I when he won the Timaru Nursery' Stakes in March last. Gold Chief did 2min llsec in the same race, and three other juveniles did 2min 11 4-sscc, 2 min 14 2-ssec and 2min 14 4-ssec on the same day. Only four juveniles contested the trotters’ division of the Sydney classic. The winner and the runner-up are by Walla Walla.

High Breeding Credentials. Stabilise, a double winner nt the Greymouth meeting, is a threo-yenr-by Robespierre from the appropriately-named Stability, by British Empire from Currency, by Paper Money from Kilroy, by Kilbroney from Orange Pippin, by William the Third, Currency was raced by Mr 11. A t . Knight, and later produced Solvent, one of the fastest sprinters ever trained by F. D. Jones. Stabilise is trained by A. McAulay. who unfortunately wasnot able to see the gelding race as ho suffered a’ broken log the day before the meeting opened. Stabilise appeared ns an acceptor for the Trial Slakes tii Oaniaru. but after his two wins on the Coast ho is not now eligible Io compel e.
