HON. W. E. BARNARD
PROPOSES TO RETAIN SPEAKERSHIP AS WELL AS NAPIER SEAT. REFERENCE TO LEADERSHIP FIGURES. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER. This Day. The Hon W. E. Barnard stated, in answer to a question, that his resignation from the Labour Party does not afl'ect either his tenure of the Napier seat or of the Speakership'of the House of Representatives. "1 was elected as Speaker by the House for the term of Parliament's life,” Mr Barnard observed. In a further statement he said: "Dr McMillan, M.P.. is correct when he states that the report of votes recorded at the caucus for the leadership of the Parliamentary Labour Party was not correct. The actual voting was as follows: Car>-. 3; Fraser. 33; McMillan, 12. These results were announced by the chairman (the Hon P. Fraser), who I am sure will confirm the true position. The minutes of caucus will do the same." The correct figures of voting for the Labour Party leadership were published in the "Times-Age” on Saturday. No other figures in this connection have appeared in our columns.
