TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Carrying of Overweight HARSH AND UNSPORTSMANLIKE RULE (BY "THE GRAFTER.") It is only right that a horse carrying under correct weight should be deprived of winning stakes gained under such conditions. It seems harsh, however, and unsportsmanlike for a horse to be disqualified for carrying more than the regulation surplus allowed by the rules. If a horse has the task of winning accentuated by carrying extra weight it should not lead to compulsory disqualification. It is difficult to win a race under any circumstances, and hence a horse carrying more than the regulation 21b or 41b in a hurdle race or steeplechase should not be subject to compulsory disqualification. There is no limit to the amount of overweight that may be carried in a race, and a slight excess of declared weight should not deprive a horse of a win.
