MR. CONANT’S SPEECH
CONDEMNED IN CANADA INDIFFERENCE IN UNITED STATES. MR CORDELL HULL'S REMARKS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 12.40 p.m.) OTTAWA, April 4. Dominion Government officials describe Mr Conant's speech as ill-ad-vised and unfortunate, adding that, the Administration is most careful Io have speakers say nothing that could be interpreted in the United States as Allied propaganda to bring the United States into the war. A Washington message says the reaction in the United States to Mr Conant's speech is one of indifference, epitomised in a statement by Mr Hull at. a Press conference, that the speech was a "nondescript utterance, without any bearing on United States foreign policy."
Mr Conant, who is Attorney-Gen-eral in the province of Ontario, declared that: "Canada’s supreme duty is to make every effort short of impairing its status as a sovereign nation to bring the United States into the war on the Allies' side."
