EARL OF ATHLONE
APPOINTMENT WELCOMED IN CANADA. EXPECTED TO ARRIVE IN JUNE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. OTTAWA. April 4. The Prime Minister, Mr Mackenzie King, announced that the Earl of Athlone would arrive in June, and therefore would be unable to open Parliament, which would reassemble in the second or third week in May. He added that he understood the Earl of Athlone might not be able to remain as Governor-General for the full term of five years. The appointment is widely welcomed. Lord Tweedsmuir frequently expressed the opinion that as he was a commoner his successor should be of the nobility. It is recalled that the Sovereign’s great-uncle, the Duke of Connaught, held the Governorship on the outbreak of the Great War. AN AMERICAN TRIBUTE NEW YORK. April 4. The “New York Times" in an editorial pays a warm tribute to the Earl and Countess of Athlone and expresses the hope that they will pay an early visit to the United States.
