THE NEW PRIME MINISTER
TN appointing- Mr Fraser as loader and consequently as Prime Minister, the Labour Party caucus has taken the course it was expected to take and one that will be approved very n-enerally. Throughout the country, and even by those who do not see eye to eye with him in politics, Mr Fraser is regarded with respect and'confidence. In dealing with exacting and responsible duties since the outbreak of war, as well as m his earlier administration of important portfolios, he has shown himself well qualified for leadership. His party obvious! \ would have weakened the strong position it holds meantime in Parliament and in the country had it turned to any alternative leader. Any question of Cabinet changes has been postponed for the moment, but some adjustments no doubt are inevitable, on the grounds, amongst others, that some Ministers, including the new head of the Government, are as matters stand heavily overloaded, and that there is a vacancy to be filled. Given the support of which he seems to be assured, Mr Fraser should have no difficulty in organising an effective Ministerial team. It is clear that in the present state of parties no question of an attempt to form a coalition is likely to arise. As the Leadci of the Opposition, Mr Hamilton, has observed, if I\l r Fraser receives the support of his party lie should be able to carry on without embarrassment. Air Fraser’s appointment to the leadership by a large and decisive majority should moan that he is assured of adequate support. Il is, of course, very necessary that the now Government should bo put into full working shape as soon as'possible. As Mr Hamilton has pointed out, there are urgent questions—notablv questions of finance and national economy m war conditions—which urgently demand attention and ought to be brought before Parliament for discussion at the earliest opportunity.
