The King George Memorial Handicap was won in solid style by Classform, and Alunga won all the way in the sprint race, the J. M. Johnston Memorial. Favourites fared only moderately, and there were one ortwo good prices for winners, but the best dividend of the day was paid on Caution in the last race and on Courting for'second in the two-year-old race. The chief event at the Greymouth meeting yesterday went to Lady Middleham, while Sham Boy scored again.
Counter Runs Well. There was a close finish to the Woodhey Hack at the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting yesterday. Gold Chase went away very fast from No 1. and led all the way. After being clear in the lead for nearly all the journey, ho was tackled in the straight by Sceptre and Counter, both of whom had been prominent in. behind, and. while the> both "reached him, they were just unable to head him off. Zest was a good fourth. She was ridden in behind the winner throughout, and would have been closer but for losing her position a little entering the straight through hanging badly. Tavoy. Minority and Military Maid were all too slow away to have any chance. Counter ran a good race throughout and should soon be at top form. A Muddling Pace. . At the Manawatu Racing Club s meeting yesterday the Awapuni Gold Cup race was run at a muddling pace, with Homily making the running from Beau Vite, and Old Bill waiting to get the drop on the three-year-old. Old Bill pulled very hard early. Beau Vite went after the leader entering the straight and had no difficulty in running home clear of Old Bill, whose challenge proved fruitless. t Primak Breaks Fetlock. Mr J. A. Betts suffered a heavy loss yesterday when his well-known jumper Primak broke a fetlock while competing in the hurdle race at the Manawatu meeting at Awapuni. Primak. always a sure jumper, never having been known to make a mistake, safely cleared the hurdle, but in landing broke a fetlock. The Acre —Lady Lucelle gelding carried on gamely for a hundred yards, and then the rider. Jenkins, dismounted to find the cause of the trouble. Primak had been performing well this season and his recent placing included the winning of the Ohura Hurdles at Stratford on New Year’s Day, and a second on the following day at the same meeting.
