Both Houses of Parliament paid tributes to the late Mr M. J. Savage. The Prime Minister. Mr Neville Chamberlain, said: “Some of us. who met him in the Coronation year, were impressed with his qualities of outspoken opinion, quickness of comprehension and intense loyalty to Imperial connections. Mr Savage was a true lover of peace, but he recognised that it was necessary to take up arms to save peace. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr C. R. Atlee. said: “Mr Savage conducted a wise and vigorous policy, strengthening his country and equipping it to meet new conditions.” Lord Snell in the House of Lords, said: "Mr Savage’s death is a heavy blow.” Lord Crewe paid a tribute to Mr Savage’s capacity and character.
