LOSSES AT SEA
ANOTHER GERMAN SHIP SCUTTLED CONTINUED IMMUNITY OF ALLIED CONVOYS. MANY U-BOATS BEING DESTROYED. Another German ship has been scuttled —a cargo steamer of 4000 tons, Daventry states. She was intercepted by British warships in northern waters. The crew was rescued. She left the Netherlands West Indies on March 4 and is the twenty-eighth German ship to be scuttled. The total of German shipping losses by capture, scuttling or sinking is 303,(146 tons. For the week ending at midnight on Sunday, only one British ship had been lost —a 5000-ton tanker. In the preceding week, of which it had been reported that no British ships had been lost, it is ascertained that the Barnhill, of 5439 tons, which was bombed and set on fire, must now be considered a total loss. Only 29 ships out of 15,934 —British, Allied and neutral —have been lost in convoy, a proportion of one in 515. Only three neutral ships have been lost in con.voy. Evidence is growing that U-boats are being sunk at such a rate that Germany cannot replace them.
