Mr R. Lendrum. of Masterton. who has enlisted for service with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, loaves for Levin Camp on Friday. Messrs Lee (Napier). E. R. Tabari. J. N. Barrott (Hastings), J. Couburn. J. Staples (Wellington), are guests at the Hotel Midland. Masterton. today. Messrs S. Bringley, R. M. McLean (Wellington). R. A. Stewart, S. S. Wilson (Waimanu) are at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton. today.

Mr. E. A. Spear.' of Masterton. who has been posted to the Army Service Corps Supply Depot, Trentham Camp, proceeded io camp on Monday. He was a member of the First Hawke's Bay Regiment. Mr R. H. Nimmo was elected president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce at a meeting of the council of the chamber last night. There was no other nomination. Mr W. I. J. Blyth was elected vice-president. Mr H. R. Piper, of the Hamilton Y.M.C.A. physical department, has been appointed physical director of the Wellington Y.M.C.A. In addition to conducting classes in the association's main building. Mr Piper will supervise the association's suburban club groups for boys. The funeral of the late Mr. George Watson, which took place yesterday afternoon, was largely attended. The Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich conducted the service at the house and at the graveside. Among the many floral tributes was a wreath from Church Street taxi-drivers. The pall-bearers were Messrs. R. F. Mitchell, W. Innes, M. Willoughby and A. Watson. After lying severely injured in Napier Public Hospital for six months, Constable Richard Byrne, Hastings, died yesterday. He was admitted to hospital on October 10 in a serious condition with spinal and other injuries received when a motor car he was driving left the road and crashed through a fence near Awatoto. He is survived by a widow and a young child.

Cabled advice was received yesterday by Mr C. Mathieson, Invercargill,, from the British Air Ministry, of the death in an aircraft accident on April 1 of his brother Pilot Officer Roderick Campbell Mathieson. aged 22. Pilot Officer Mathieson was a son of Police Senior-Sergeant I. H. Mathieson. Hawera. who was stationed at Invercargill as sergeant for about three years before 1921. Pilot Officer Mathieson received his secondary school education at Timaru and later was a prominent member of the Timaru Municipal Band, enjoying considerable success at contests as a solo cornetist. He subsequently lived at Port Chalmers and Wellington, and left New Zealand two years ago to join the Royal Air Force.
