Imm, formerly an inspector of the American Bureau of Air Commerce, shown with his latest device, called a “librascope,” which is calculated to save countless air line hours. It is a “design computor” which will enable engineers, merely by twisting a series of geared dials, to obtain maximum aeronautical efficiency out of planes-in-the-making. It will also correlate meteorological reports from all parts of the country. Working from data gained from wind tunnel tests of a model at his Burbank factory, Imm explained that plane designers will be able to compute the maximum speed, climb, altitude, and load obtainable under varying conditions, and translate this from the dials turned on the new instrument. The design apparatus consists of interlinked dials, each representing a known aviation factor. They affect each other like the figures in a series of simultaneous mathematical equations.
