LAUNDERING FABRICS

USEFUL HINTS. Crepe and satin materials have a tendency to shrink after being washed. This is sometimes the cause of great despair, since the average housewife is unaware that the garment can be restored to its original size by putting back into the water, drying again, and stretching by ironing in both directions. The crinkled surface on crepe fabrics can be preserved by ironing on the wrong side when practically dry. Organdie should be washed in warm water, thoroughly rinsed, squeezed through a towel, and ironed at once, as by this means the stiffness in the material is retained. Embroidered or crinkled organdie should be washed in warm suds and ironed when almost dry. The dye in the cheaper, printed silks will run if given any encouragement. To lessen the chance of.running, add a little salt to warm washing water, and wash as hastily as possible, rinsing quickly, and squeezing the bulk of the moisture out between two towels. If there is any sign of running, do not hang out to dry, as this causes the water, while dripping down, to carry the dye with it through the material.
