GUN CLUB MEETING •4> \ SPLENDID SHOOTING BY C. E. GREY. V'Tiines-Age” Special.) The Carterton Gun Club finished a successful season at the week-end ~T>n the Club's grounds. The conditions were excellent for shooting and as a result some remarkably good shooting was recorded. Mr. C. E. Grey, of Masterton, was in excellent form. He started with five "eye-openers” and throughout the whole afternoon’s shooting registered 41 hits and only missed one shot and that was in the Gimcrack Match from 26 yards. With the exception of four shots all birds were got with the first barrel. He was warmly congratulated on his performance. . Messrs. N. Prussing, Rex Walker, J. Rayner. C. A. Brown, W. Moroney and R. Fuge also shot well, as also did the veteran R. J. King. The meeting was excellently managed by the executive and the club's capable secretary, Mr. J. V. Gustofson. Mr. Joe McKnight looked after the trap in his usual efficient manner. Before the conclusion of the meeting, the president (Mr. G. A. Vincent) in a happy speech, thanked everyone for their patronage during the season and the ladies for their interest and attendance at the various competitions. A happy idea had been struck and that was the inclusion of a ladies’ match. They were not required to shoot but simply draw the name of a competitor who fired for them. This event took place and ended in a tie between Mrs. R. Cameron and Mrs. N. Prussing who had drawn Messrs. C. E. Grey and J. Rayner respectively. There were two prizes and the shooters fired off to decide the first honour, Grey winning after firing five shots. As a result, Mr. Vincent had pleasure in handing Mrs. Cameron a beautiful cut glass vase and Mrs. Prussing a vase. Mr. Vincent then proceeded to present the Hadley Cup and miniature cup to Mr. R. Cameron and also an electric '.hot water jug, the gift of Mr. Jock 'McKenzie, to Mr. Cameron. Cheers &,'ere given for the winners of the trophies and for the donors of the ‘ trophies. The following is the result of the matches fired: — Fifteen bird, four track match; sweepstake and ladies' competition. —C. E. Grey (18yds.) possible 15, 13 birds with first barrel and two with second; J. Rayner (13yds) possible 15, 14 birds with first barrel and one with second, tie. (In the shoot-off Grey --won.) N. Prussing (16), L. Smith (16), R. J. King. (15) tied for second with 14 breaks; Rex Walker (13), B. Williams (13) and C. A. Brown (13), with 13 breaks divided third prize money. The other shooters were: G. Bretherton (18), H. K. Smith (16), J. Gallagher (14) R. Fuge (12), J. Crawford (12), 12 breaks each; W. Moroney (12), A. Warren (16) 11 beaks; G. A. Vincent (12) R. Prussing starting from 16 yards finished at 24 yards; Rex Walker (13) and C. A. Brown (13) finished at 21 yards; W. Moroney (11) finished at 19 yards, were runners up.
BOWLING RINK COMPETITION. The Wairarapa championship rinks competition was commenced on the Carterton green on Saturday. The conditions were on the sudden death system and at the end of the afternoon’s play four of the competing rinks had been eliminated, leaving Greytown and Featherston to play the deciding game which will take place at Carterton on Saturday next, commencing at 2 o’clock. The bowlers were entertained at afternon tea. The green was in exf cellent order and played true and fast. • The following were the results: — J First Round. Wilder, T. Carr, Thompson, Shearer <s) (Park) defeated Smith, Harrington, R. Thompson, Riggs (s) (Carterton), 21/18. This was a fairly even, game and on the 20th head Park were 1 up, 19/18, and on the concluding head they got two. Davis, James, Higgison, Deas (s) (Featherston) beat Pryor, McNally, Jenkins. Knell (s) (Martinborough), 37Z/7. Martinborough only scored on four heads and were badly outclassed. Brown, Kilgour. Sheddon. McLeod (s) (Greytown) beat Trevorrow, Rogers. Stubbings, Reid (s) (Masterton), 20211. Second Round. Featherston defeated Park. 23/16; Greytown drew the bye. and play .off with Featherston. Carterton v. Martinborough. A friendly game was played on the Martinborough green on Saturday between Carterton and Martinborough, and a most enjoyable time was spent. The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea. for which Mr. A. W. Beale, president of the Carterton Club returned thanks. McGregor. Caseley, Wright (s) lost io Hart, Harris, Matin, Barber <s), 28/10: Martin, George, Beveridge. Yates (s) drew with Newbould. Barr. Beale, Sorensen (s), 21/21. Personal. Mr. Geo. R. Grimmer, who is wellknown in Carterton. has been appointed from a large number of applicants, head of the Maintenance Department at the Weraroa military Hying base. Thanksgiving Services. St. Andrew’s Church, Carterton, was well filled at both thanksgiving services held yesterday, when the Rev. W. J. Cooling preached very impressive sermons. Cricket Match. The Parkvale and Pirate (Featherston) cricket teams played a match at Featherston during the week-end. Parkvale made 97 in the first innings and 114 in the second innings. Pirates compiled 59 and 102. Parkvale thus won by. 50 runs. The visitors wore most hospitably treated, the outing being one of the most enjoyable the Parkvale team has had away from homo. Vital Statistics. The following are the vital statistics for March, the figures for the corresponding month in 1939 being given in parentheses: Births 2 (6), marriages 3 (0). deaths 2 (4). The figures for the quarter are: Births 10 (21). marriages 10 (5), deaths 8 (12).
