FREIGHT ON BARLEY
——— —.—__ PROTEST BY PAHIATUA FARMERS. EFFECT ON PORK PRODUCTION. There was some discussion at today's meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial | Executive of the Farmers' Union concerning a Pahiatua remit drawing the attention of lhe Minister of Internal Affairs to the fact that the benefit intended as a result of the importation from Australia of barley for pork production was largely annulled by the j excessive freight charges. Freight from Wellington to Pahiatua was 7d a bushel thereby increasing lhe cost io the farmer in the Pahiatua district to about 4s 4d a bushel, the remit stated. Mr J. 11. Bremner said the matter had already been taken up with the Government. Mr L. T. Daniell said it all..came back to the shocking transport system. They had seen the lorries put oil' the l road, and farmers were now unable l to have goods delivered al reasonable ■ cos I. Mr Bremner thought they could ask the Department of Agriculture to take the matter up with the Railways Department to see if 10 sack lots could be carried at. the same rale as 15 sack lots. Reference was made to another Pahiatua remit, that the executive of the Pahiatua branch viewed with grave concern the announcement in lhe Press that the jAcclimitisation Society had been granted permission to import snails on which to feed trout. Further lhe executive also desired to enter a strong protest against, this permission, as the snails wore notoriously hosts for the liver fluke, a deadly disease in sheep, and might became a serious menace to lhe sheep farmer. It was pointed out that there was no danger of the Government giving permission to import the snails in question.
