CATHOWE RAY COMPASS

APPLICATION TO AIRCRAFT. INVESTIGATION IN CANADA. OTTAWA. Scientists of the Canadian Government are investigating special application of the cathode ray compass to aircraft in war time. The cathode ray compass is a form of radio direction finder specially adapted for aircraft use and measures the direction of distant stations with respect to the fore-and-aft axis of aircraft, arid can receive bearings from three ground stations simultaneously, when using the same frequency. The cathode ray compass can also make use of existing stations just as more conventional direction finders do. but oilers the additional advantages of greater freedom from radio interference, greater freedom from static interference and greater speed of operation. The high velocity of modern aircraft demands that all measurements used to calculate the plane’s position be made as rapidly as possible and in consequence the principle of the cathode raj' compass is particularly suited for direction finding from aircraft in flight.
