Owing Io protracted drought conditions. mere is a serious shortage of milk in Sydney. During the weekend, private individuals, milk bars, and small shops were rationed by 20 per cent. The end of the record heat wave experienced over the State during the past week, and possibly the end of lhe drought, is heralded by a cool southerly change. The water shortage in many towns is al present desperate. The summer rainfall, in Sydney this year was 4 the lowest on record. Bush fires have caused enormous damage. Passengers on -the two divisions of the Melbourne express, both of which arrived at Sydney six hours late, spent a night of anxiety as the trains sped through miles of fierce bush fires. Railways bridges caught fire, but breakdown gangs did great work keeping the lines safe.
