CAUGHT NAPPING
DORNIER PLANE WINGED RY SPITFIRE RETREAT IN DIRE DISORDER. WITH ENGINE DAMAGED & WING DOWN. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Dav, 10 a.m.) RUGBY. March 31. A Dornier raider was caught napping by a single Spitfire of the R.A.F, fighter command far out over lite North Sea today. When last seen by the tspittire tne Dormer was Tiymg low over the water in disabled condition. The Spitfire, with one other fighter from the same squadron, was on patrol short!'.' after noon, off the Suffolk coast, flying at about 16.000 feet, when the pilot sighted what seemed to be an enemy a ire,-a fl at 1000 feet below, lie recognised it. as a Dornier, but to his surprise the enemy did not. appear to see him. Slipping astern of the Dornier, he fired two bursts of machinegun bullets. The German pilot, awakening to his danger, stalled and went into a steep dive, of about 15.000 feet, down to sea level. The Spitfire pilot followed, watching as ho dived the German air-gunner fire lor 10 seconds without effect. Al. sea level, the Dornier flattened out and flew eastwards with black smoke pouring from the starboard engine and with the star board wing down.
