BASKETBALL

NEV/ ZEALAND TOURNAMENT. FINAL GAMES AT WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The final games were played yesterday in the New Zealand centennial basketball tournament in Wellington. Some very good basketball was seen, there being practically no wind. As was thought, Wellington beat Otago comparatively easily, and won the Annie Brown Cup with two losses. Canterbury and Hawke's Bay were next, each with two wins and a draw. Otago and Southland each had two draws. The best game of the afternoon was the North Island v. South Island. The players were chosen on their play in the tournament. For some years now the South Island has won, but on paper it looked as though the North would be much too strong this year. In the first half, though North led by only two goals at half-time, they were combining better and had most of the play. Within two minutes of resuming play the South had evened the score. North Island finally won by two goals. Her Excellency Lady Galway and the Mayoress. Mrs T. C. A. Hislop, watched the game with Mrs H. D. Muir (New Zealand president). Miss M. E. Armstrong (president of the New Zealand Referees' Association), and Miss O. M. Wharton (president of the Wellington association).

After the games Lady Galway presented the trophies. Results: — First grade: Canterbury 15. Southland 14; Wellington 24. Otago 14. Second grade: Southland Minor 7, Manawatu 6; Wanganui 17, Poverty Bay 1G; Wanganui 13, Ashburton 12: Wanganui 13. Poverty Bay 9. Final: Wanganui 'lB, Southland Minor 14. Runners-up: Southland Minor 14. Poverty Bay 13.

Third grade: Horowhenua 16. Wairoa 16; Buller 22, Marlborough 10; Buller 25, Hawke's Bay Minor 20; Horowhenua 16, Hokitika 12. Trophy winners were:— First grade: New Zealand Cup.
