MARLENE WINS PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP
MICH CLASS HANDICAP TO TE KAHU
(BY
“THE GRAFTER.”)
The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting meeting was continued yesterday when Marlene won the President's Handicap by four lengths from Crown Jewel. The High Class Handicap saw Te Kahu, a rank outsider, awarded first place on a protest, the actual winner being Franz Derby, which was placed second as the result of the protest.
Wild Career. The success of Wild Career in the Riverton Cup on Saturday recalls that two years ago he won the same race and was railed to Riccarton over the week-end to take his place in lhe Great Easter Handicap, n He was unplaced. and had a similar experience in the Great Autumn Handicap. Though he accepted for a couple of races at Riccarton this week ho did not make the trip.
In Veteran Stage. Rebel Chief is a constant visitor from Canterbury for West Coast meetings, and he seldom fails to win some money on the trip. He was a winner at Westport and his decisive end-to-end victory on the yielding track at Hokitika on Saturday suggests that lie will win again in the near future.
A Good Prospect. Judging by the easy manner in which Miss- Wniiarere, formerly trained in the North Island, disposed of the hacks in the March Handicap at the Westland races on Saturday, she should prove a useful performer at West Coast meetings. Early Return from Sham Boy. Sham Boy, the winner of the Trial Stake at Hokitika on Saturday, raced in the interests of Mr. O. F. Watson, of Christchurch, who only last week acquired the Shambles—Call Girl gelding f -om Mr. J. H. Prosser. Sham Boy has mways shown speed but fractiousness at lhe barrier affected his chances of winning a race for Mr. Prosser.
Remarkable Coincidence. There was a remarkable racing coincidence on Saturday. W. Jenkins rode Amigo to win the Feilding' Cup. and two horses that he had ridden in their previous engagements. Black Thread and Lady Furst, won the principal handicaps at Auckland and Wairarapa.
No Racing This Week. In respect of the memory of the Prime Minister (Mr M. J. Savage) and at the request of the Racing Conference, there will be no further racing this week. The Avondale and Greymouth meetings set flown for Saturday and Monday next will be held on Monday and Wednesday, and lhe Vincent meeting to have been hold at Wingatui on Saturday has been postponed till the- following Saturday.
I Promising Filly’s Untimely Encl. I The promising two-year-old daugh- | ter of Pink Coat —Serena, met with at: ' untimely end owing to being chased by stray dogs around the paddock she was in. With her stable mate Kehurangi, she attempted to jump a fence breaking a log. Kehurangi was injured. but the owner of Serena, Mr Wilson Paku. had to destroy the filly. Serena was by Pink Coat—Honeste, by Honour from Lucinda. Apart from the fact that she had a promising racing' career ahead, Mr Paku valued her as a future brood mare owing to her good breeding. Serena only started three times. She was third to Chary in the Juvenile Stakes at Feilding in November and won the Nursery Handicap at Woodville from Toacony and Oregon by four lengths. She ran unplaced at Masterion in October. Owing io a sever,- injury received in her winning race --.he had been spelled during which time her leg had completely recovered. Mr Paku was putting her into work again for the classic race the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes.
