CARTERTON

MOTOR CAR CAPSIZES DRIVER TAKEN TO HOSPITAL. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr B. Taplin. of Carrington was injured in a motor car accident near the Taratahi Hotel yesterday afternoon. With two passengers he was travelling in a southerly direction and when turning the bend of the road the car got out of control and turned a complete somersault. Mr Taplin was taken to the Masterton Hospital for treatment. The other occupants of the car were not injured. Drs Wells and Campbell were called to the scene of the accident. On enquiry at the Masterton Hospital this morning it was ascertained that Mr Taplin was progressing satisfactorily. TENNIS CARTERTON CHAMPIONSHIPS. The championships competitions of the Carterton Tennis Club have been completed with the exception of the senior ladies' championship. The finalists in this event are Miss B. Peters and Miss E. Newbould. The match will be played after Easter. BOWLING PAIRS TOURNAMENT. A progressive pairs tournament was played on the Carterton green yesterday afternoon, half a dozen players taking part. C. J. DeLacey was the most successful skip, winning all three games, and scoring 36 points to 26 against. P. Bain had two wins and a loss (21 points to 25). J. Newbould secured two wins and a loss (27 points to 28). In the leads section N. Boyne s with.three wins (33 points against 27 points) and E. Clark three wins (32 points to 17) were most successful. Motor Cyclist Injured. On Thursday evening two motor cyclists came into collision in the Main Street at the north end of Carterton. They were Mr R. Ordish, of Dalefield, and Mr Spooner, of Rhodes Street, Carterton. Both were riding in the same direction on the main highway when Mr Spooner turned his cycle with the result that he collided with Mr Ordish. Both riders were thrown on to the roadway. Mr Spooner received a number of abrasions but his injuries are not serious. He was attended by Dr Wells.

Easter Church Services. Tomorrow the offertories at St Mark’s Church, Carterton, _ will be handed to the Vicar. It is expected that there will be large congregations at the services. North-West Gale. On Thursday a strong nor'-west gale raged in Carterton and district and caused considerable minor damage. Shopkeepers suffered inconvenience, paper and rubbish being blown into their doorways. So fierce was the wind that in many cases motorists had great difficulty in keeping their machines on the road. At Carrington, County workmen carrying chips to the road near Mr McAulay’s residence, had an unenviable experience with their laden trucks. One of the workmen, who was using a grader on the road, found it difficult to shut the door of the cab and then the wind slammed it with such force that the wind screen was shattered and the driver thrown on to the blade of the* machine but was not injured. Presbyterian Church Services. The morning service at Carterton tomorrow will be held at 11 o’clock and there will be an afternoon service at West Taratahi commencing at 2.45 o’clock. Both services will be taken by the Rev W. J. Couling. The evening service at Carterton will be taken by Mr G. W. Morice, of Masterton. Personal Items. Miss M. Smart, of Clifton Avenue, Carterton, is spending the holidays at Hastings. Miss B. Peters, of High Street, Carterton. is visiting friends in Taranaki. Mrs J. M. Osborne, who has been staying .with her sister Miss B. Armstrong, Park Road. Carterton, is at present at Kawatiri House. Paraparaumu. Miss O. Barber, Pembroke. Street, is visiting her sister, Mrs Alan Bone at Paeroa. Messrs R. Moody and S. Priggs, of Wellington, are visiting Waihakeke. Mr and Mrs C. C. Callender, of Carterton, arc visiting Paraparamumu for the Easter holidays.
