OUTBREAK OF FIRE

ON FOOTHILLS OF RUAHINE RANGES. VOLUNTEER HELPERS ASSIST SETTLERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE. This Day. Settlers at Tataramoa and Matamau had an anxious time on Thursday night, during a heavy south-westerly gale, through a fire starting from near the foothills of the Ruahine ranges. Sparks from a tree-top which caught alight spread over a wide area, lighting logs and causing fires in shelter belts, plantations and hedges. Settlers, reinforced by Territorials, soldiers on leave, and other volunteer helpers, had a busy time for several hours protecting their homesteads and outbuildings. The fire presented a great spectacle when at its height, but the actual damage done was not heavy, as the pasture was green in consequence of recent rains. Had the countryside been dry there would have been every possibility of a devastating blaze. — (P.A.)
