Tn one of the most spectacular fires seen in Melbourne for years, thousand of gallons of petrol, kerosene, crude oil and lubricating’ oil, at the Vacuum Oil Company’s Depot. at. the Sports wood railway’ siding, near the mouth of the Yarra, were lost late last night.

Sabotage is suspected. Over two hundred explosions were heard during the fire. Hundreds of policemen and military guards threw a cordon around the depot, and soldiers with fixed bayonets held back a crowd estimated at 20,000 because of the danger of the flames spreading to huge main containers. The Juel destroyed was housed in galvanised iron sheds.
