ATTACK ON SYLT BY BRITISH BOMBERS
Terrific Damage Done to German Base MANY DIRECT HITS ON HANGARS AND OUTER ESTABLISHMENTS ONLY ONE MACHINE FAILS TO RETURN Terrific damage was inflicted by the British air raid on German air bases on the island of Sylt, Sir Kingsley Wood, Air Minister, informed the House of Commons in a statement reported by Daventry. The raid was carried out in answer to the German raid on the Orkneys on Saturday. More than twice as many British planes took part as the enemy employed in the attack on Scapa Flow. Tons of high explosives and incendiary bombs were dropped. Hangars and oil storage tanks were set on fire and light railways and other parts of the base were damaged. A Danish report says the British destroyed one of the four towers on the Hindenburg Dam (connecting the island of Sylt with the mainland). Some of the British planes again flew over Sylt in the morning to confirm the damage done. Intense anti-aircraft fire was encoumntered but with one exception all the British machines returned safely. Sylt, it is stated provides an excellent target, because all civilians were removed from the island some time ago.
