PHYSICAL EDUCATION

NEW SYSTEM FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS.

APPROVED BY MINISTER

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day.

A. new system of physical education in primary schools has been approved by the Minister of Education (Mr Fraser) according to a letter received by the Wellington Education Board from the Education. Department. It is based on a syllabus which has proved successful in Great Britain. Methods of class organisation, the introduction of rythmic work, agility exorcises and minor games are the most important, innovations. Simple apparatus introduces a greater variety of exercises and space is necessary, so it is desirable that only one physical education class should be.on a playground at a lime. Most of the equipment, is procurable—basketballs. Rugby balls, . old tennis balls, hoops, lengths or rope. Short pegs for marking out. areas will be necessary. as will improvised targets, jumping stands and pits; also coloured bands for distinguishing teams. Light, loose clothes and rubber-soled shoes are desirable. The use of specialists in large primary schools. intermediate schools and district high schools is advocated.

The board decided to ask the Superintendent of Education, Mr Smithoils, to meet it and also to ask the Department for a supply of books for perusal by members.
