GENERAL STRIKE

THREATENED AT AUSTRALIAN STEEL WORKS MEN WANT SHORTER HOURS & HIGHER PAY. EFFECTS OF COAL HOLD-UP. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. SYDNEY, March I£. A message from Wollongong states that a general strike at Port Kembla steel works is threatened by the nightshift workers as a result of the management’s refusal to discuss claims for a 40-hour week, a 20 per cent wagedncrease and double time for Sunday work. The strike policy has yet to be endorsed by the day-shift workers. The coal strike so far is not causing much inconvenience as most of the shipping companies and gasworks have fairly large reserves, but every means is being taken to economise. In Victoria some country railway services have been curtailed in order to conserve supplies.
