EKETAHUNA

PRIMARY SCHOOLS ANNUAL SPORTS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Bush Primary Schools’ Sports Association’s annual sports were held at the Eketahuna Domain on Saturday and a most successful gathering resulted. The weather was on its best behaviour and the attendance was large. Competition among the 19 schools which took part was exceptionally keen. Hukanui, the holders of the senior trophy, were again the winners in this section, gaining the excellent total of 75 points. The junior cup was won by the Konini School with a total of 24 points. The officials of the day, who comprised the teachers and committeemen of the various schools, had a busy day controlling the numerous competitions and their efforts deserve the greatest praise. The secretary, Mr. R. G. McKenzie (Ballance) was responsible to a large extent for the success achieved.

At the conclusion of the sports, the various teams, all of which carried banners, marched past the president, Mr. R. Mabey, and finally halted facing the pavilion where the speeches and presentation of the trophies were made.

Mr. Mabey welcomed Mr. J. Robertson, M.P., to the gathering. He thanked all who had contributed towards the success of the gathering and congratulated the children for their sportsmanship and ability on the field. Mr. J. Robertson expressed his pleasure at being asked to attend the gathering and he congratulated the Association on the way it encouraged the children of the Bush schools in such healthy recreation. The Mayor, Mr. W. Simpson, who presented the trophies to the winners, said it gave him much pleasure to be present and see such a happy crowd of children taking part in such healthy competition. He stressed the importance of such gatherings and congratulated the Association on its efforts. He then presented the trophies as follow: Senior Cup, Hukanui; Badger Cup, for most points in relay events, Hukanui; Junior Cup, Konini. Miss Beryl Mabey, donor of the Beryl Mabey Cup for small schools, was then called upon to present the trophy and in doing so said: “I want to congratulate the children of the Ngaturi School on winning the cup and I hope they have had as much pleasure in competing for it as I have had in giving iff I wish to thank my father for fulfilling my wish and enabling me to give this cup. I hope that the small schools of the district will join the association and compete for it." The following are the points gained by the various schools: — Senior Group.—Hukanui, 75; Ballance, 46J; Alfredton, 23; Mangamaire, 17>; Nireaha, 151; Mangamutu, 141; Mangatainoka, 71. Junior—Konini, 24; Newman, 16; Hastwells, 121; Hamua, 91; Kohinui, 6. Small schools.— Ngaturi, 41; Kakariki, 3; Putara, 3; Kaitawa, 1; Marima, 0; Mangahao, 0; Kaiparoro, 0. Roncjokokako School Sports. The Rongokokako School held its annual sports at the school on Friday and these proved most successful. The school committee were in charge and the ladies of the district provided afternoon tea. Personal. The many friends of Mr. A. Frederickson will be pleased to learn that he has recovered sufficiently from his recent illness to be able to return home. Mrs. H. Doherty, Alfredton Road, is paying a visit to New Plymouth. Mrs. A. Stuart is able to get about again after her illness. Mrs. A. Fredericksen, while accompanying Mr. A. Fredericksen home from Wellington on Saturday, had the misfortune to suffer a painful injury to her head, when the door of the car in which they were travelling, closed on her. She was later admitted to Masterton Hospital, where she is progressing favourably. Presbyterian Church. The ladies’ committee of the Eketahuna Presbyterian Church will hold a shop day at Wilson’s corner on Thursday next and donations of produce, fruit, etc., will be gratefully accepted. The proceeds are in aid of necessary renovations to the church. This is the first publjp appeal the church ha r for 22 years and it is one that is most worthy of support
