STEAMER WRECKED
OFF NORTH-WEST COAST OF TASMANIA
UNCHARTED ROCK STRUCK.
ALL ON BOARD GF.T SAFELY ASHORE.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) HOBART. This Day. When she struck an uncharted reck off the north-western coast of Tasmania, the Union Company’s vessel Kahika foundered in a few minutes. The crew of twenty-four launched a lifeboat and landed safely. The overloaded boat could not carry them all and frequently some men had to swim beside it, while the men in the boat baled furiously. The impact apparently ripped the ship's hull from stem io stern. The master, Captain Keith, and the crew saved only what they stood up in. Captain Keith estimated that the vessel was lying in ten fathoms of water. Fortunately the sea was calm. When the men landed at daybreak local residents gave them food and clothing before they were taken to Burn io by a motorbus.
