Mr E. M. Bannister, of Dixon Street, who is a patient in the Masterton Hospital, is reported to be progressing satisfactorily. ‘
Messrs W. J. Horn (Ashhurst), N. F. Chisholm and E. Haverfield (Wellington) stayed at the Prince of Wales Hotel at the weekend. Airman Pilot J. H. Hamill, of Masterton. a member of the R.N.Z.A.F., who has been home on sick leave, returned to Levin today. Mr. W. Moore, who met with serious injuries when attacked recently by a bull, has recovered sufficiently to allow him to leave the Glenwood Hospital and return home.
Messrs R. Metcalfe (Palmerston North). C. Morgan (Wanganui). A. G. Edey. J. Ronald and W. Moeller (Wellington) were guests recently at the Hotel Midland, Masterton.
Mr. H. W. Waters, who has been manager and secretary of the Wellington Club for 15 years, will retire at the end of April. He will be succeeded by Mr. S. McDonald, at present manager of the Royal Oak Hotel. The death has occurred of the Duke of Hamilton and Brandon, a London cablegram states. He will be succeeded by his eldest son. Squadron Leader the Marquess of Douglass and Clydesdale, known as the “fighting Marquess.” The funeral of the late Mr C. H. Robbins took place in Masterton on Saturday afternoon, the Rev. T. V. Pearson officiating. The pall-bearers were Messrs I. Allen, E. M. Holt, R. Kenny, C. Moore, V. Welch and J. McLennan.
The death of Mr. H. Lawrence at Wanganui on Friday has, with the enlistment of two other councillors, reduced the strength of the Wanganui City Council by three. The two members who have enlisted and are now in camp are Messrs. D. W. Earle and C. N. Armstrong.
The death occurred yesterday of William Vallance Wardell, only son of Mr. 11. J. Wardell and the late Mrs. Wardell. of Te Whiti. at the age of 15 years. The lad had been ill for some time past and had been attending Scots College, Wellington. The interment will be a private one.
Mr. Patrick Lucas Hamilton, who lives near Pleasant Point, yesterday celebrated what he claims is his 110th birthday. He received numerous congratulatory messages from all parts of the Dominion. Mr. Hamilton was born in County Donegal. Ireland, on St. Patrick's Day in the reign of William IV. and came to New Zealand, landing at Lyttelton in 1870. Shortly afterwards he came to live in South Canterbuiv where he has remained ever since. Mr Hamilton has been assisted about, but retains his faculties to a surprising degree, and his memory of events in the early days is still good.
