CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Wellington Club’s Autumn Meeting KEEN RACING IN BRILLIANT WEATHER KATHBELLA WINS THOMPSON HANDICAP (BY “THE GRAFTER.”) The autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club opened at Trentham yesterday in brilliant weather. The racing was very keen and was watched by a large crowd. Favourites did not fare veiy well and the biggest surprise of the day was the win of Student Prince in the first event. The principal race, the Thompson Handicap, provided a very close finish for the first two places, Kathbella beating Orelio in the last stride. The Railway Handicap was won by Sir Crusoe, who has had a rapid rise to good class, and had run out his hack nomination only last week at Taranaki. Yesterday saw his first start in an open handicap. The St Leger Stakes drew only two opponents for the crack three-year-old Beau Vite, and he had no difficulty in scoring an easy win. The time was slow. The totalisator handled for the day, £54,254 10s (win £24,3/1 10s, place £30,153), £5334 ahead of the opening day last March. The track was in excellent order, and provided perfect going.
There were several inquiries io occupy the judicial stewards. They expressed dissatisfaction with the riding of both Gaelic Song and Ruling Star in the Highweight, but the connections of the horses produced evidence to show support, and there was no suggestion of malpractice, no action being taken. Interference to Areas in the Trial Plate, also inquired into, showed no grounds for action. Interference to Ruatiti in the Tinakori Handicap resulted in an inquiry being opened and adjourned till tomorrow. T. R. George, trainer of Lord Cavendish, was fined £2 for late scratching in the Railway Handicap. Results:—
