TODAY’S PROCESSION
MANY NOTABLE FEATURES RELICS OF EARLY DAYS. CONTRAST WITH MODERN DEVELOPMENTS. The Centennial procession which was an outstanding feature of today's celebrations was one of the most spectacular ever seen in Masterton. Included in the procession were a Maori hut and party, followed by an ancient Maori canoe on a trailer; pioneers ot the district and early settiers on foot, carrying tools and; implements used in the very early days and accompanied by a pack bullock end pioneers ’of the district and early settlers on horseback, accompanied by children on ponies and pack horses. The ancient and modern farm implements and machinery included two waggons (tandem) drawn by six horses, and displayed on the waggons were one of the first ploughs brought into the Wr.irarapa (1854), an old wine press used in Masterton for many years and imported from France 0.875), an old go-a-shore (1870), and old pit saws, one qsed at “Braricepeth" (1855) and the other used at ■Ditton" (1870). Then came an old farm cart. (1875). an old hand cart made at Kuripuni (1875). in which was displayed an old chaff-cutter, hand operated (1860); an old waggon drawn by four horse team tandem U 870), an old chaff-cutter (1890). hay press (stationary), hay press (working), threshing mill, and a header harvester (working). The march of time in sanitation was depicted in a series of old-time and modern service floats.
In the impressive transport section, the horse drawn exhibits included an (■■pen coaca made in Masterton to a Polish design (1890), a phaeton imported from England (1900). a phaeton made in New Zealand <1900?, a single seater buggy, a cab made in Masterton (1907), a Raleigh cart made in Christchurch (1920). and a horse and gig. • The cycle exhibits included a penny-farthing bantam cycle, a tanciem cycle. tri-cycles. and other models. in the motor exhibits were a De-Dion motor car (1901), an automobile buggy (1902). a Morris Oxford roadster (1911). a model “T" Ford (1912), a Rover touring car (1924). a Sunbeam sedan (1926), and a modern car De Luxe (1940).
The timber industry was represented by a bullock team and waggon. (.10 bullocks), a motor log hauler, and a log truck with logs. The ancient and modern road making machinery was headed by a surveyor and chainman, followed by workers with tools, wheelbarrows and ancient working equipment, a metal dray, motor lorry laden with wooden culverts and bridge timber, a -motor lorry marking the progress of bridge construction and design, a motor lorry displaying modern concrete culverts, crib blocks to hold slips, and groyne netting for river work, an old time horse grader (1910), a tractor and pull grader (1920), an auto patrol dual wheel power grader weighing 8 tons, an auto patrol dual wheel Diesel power grader weighing 9 tons, a heavy duty Diesel tandem power grader weighing 10 tons, earth moving machinery conveyed on a motor lorry uitd drawing a portable hut. an excavator conveyed on a trailer of modern design, a portable tar sprayer, a steam road roller, a light motor path roller, and a work-shop display of modern equipment used for repairing modern road making machinery. Fire fighting equipment included a steam five engine, horse drawn (1378). a modern fire engine, and a modern fire fighting unit. In the hospital section wore shown a pioneer ambulance, a modern ambulance, and the progress of The general section included a float exhibiting early sewing machines and a spinning wheel, and floats by the Plunket Society and the Townswomen's Guild.
