BAT AND BALL
OLD TIMERS ENJOY CRICKET MATCH
NORTH BEAT SOUTH WAIRARAPA
CENTENNIAL WEEK ATTRACTION.
Those “Old Timer" cricketers who turned out, in bright autumn sunshinb on the Park Oval yesterday afternoon to play a match, North v South Wairarapa, showed that their skill had not faded with the passing of the years. North Wairarapa. captained by T. Joidan, scored 126 and D. C. Collins's South Wairarapa team 102, so that North won by 24 runs. The only disappointment of the match was the attendance of the public, which could not have exceeded 150. Well-known figures in all walks of Wairarapa life wore flannels and pricket boots again. The Masterton Borough Council, the Wairarapa A. and P. Society and the medical and legal professions were represented by sound all-rounders and three prominent New Zealand golfers drove almost as well with a leather ball along the ground as they do with a rubber one, through the air. H. H. Daniell and Dr Berney were bowled in quick succession for "ducks” when North opened their innings but Ashworth was aggressive and hit two sharp fours off' Anderson to the leg boundary. A. Dixon had scored a single when stentorian appeals from all parts of the field for a catch behind the wickets by McKenna, sent him back to the pavilion.
John Hornabrook, who could be a fine cricketer if he took the game seriously. opened his shoulders to the first ball and drove it crisply for four. He scored two singles with good strokes and then was clean bowled by a beautifully flighted ball from the ex-New Zealand representative. Stan Brice. O Jones got a four away before being caught by Anderson off Burt. Ashworth retired at 22, after giving a fine display of powerful hitting which included three fours and a six.
T. Jordan began cautiously with three singles, and keen South Wairarapa fielding prevented two more runs. Jordan then hit two sizzling fours past mid-on to the grandstand, but Collins clean bowled him with the next ball. Patrick showed clean strokes in making an excellent 20 which included two; vigorous fours. P. Smith made 14 (two fours) before falling lbw to Tom Horton. Smart bowled Styles for a duck and Torrance hit two powerful fours. THE NORTH TAIL WAGS. Then the tail wagged merrily to the tune of the legal pair, G. Wilson and N. Whiteman, who put on 38 runs for the last wicket. This pair hit four after four off the bowling of Smart and Sortain Smith, and. retired unbeaten. Faced with the formidable total of 126, South Wairarapa went in to bat on a wearing wicket. Daniell, with his cunning slows, had Anderson and Booth guessing. Booth went for the bowling and banged three loose ones to the boundary but Daniell changed pace and clean bowled him. Brice got: a single and a six past mid-on beforg the wily Dixon tricked him with a yorker. Burt knocked up 24. the top score of the day, by bright play which included two fours and a lofty six onto the boat sheds.
Collins, as should an ex-Cambridge New Zealand and Wellington representative, hit a four off his first ball and seemed set for a score. Jordan sent down a straight one and Collins was clean bowled when he tried to swing i to the leg boundary. Cundy was bowled by Patrick before he had scored. Ashworth, who kept wickets cleanly for North, stumped Dohnt for 6 off a deceptive ball from Patrick. Gardiner and Horton scored seven between them Horton hitting a four that kept at daisy level. South hopes rose when McKenna and Smart hit a salvo of five fours but. P. Smith and Whiteman bowled them. Sortain Smith, who still plays occasionally for Old Boys, hit two singles and was shaping well when H. M. B. Trapp was bowled by Torrance, first ball, for a duck.
