WELLINGTON, This Day. “I am pleased that the men on the v. aterfront in Auckland have decided to resume work under the conditions laid down by myself on Monday on behalf of the Government,” said the Minister of Labour, Mr Webb, last evening. Reports on the discussions that had taken place with the Auckland waterside workers were made to a meeting of Cabinet yesterday by Mr Webb and by the Minister of Supply. Mr Sullivan, after their return to Wellington from the north. “The discussions between the executive of the Waterside Workers Union and the shipowners, to which I referred, relative to the introduction of a new system of employment under co-operative principles, to operate under the supervision of Mr R. E. Price, the controller, will be opened during the present week,” said Mr Webb. "The negotiations should proceed continuously without delay, while_ the controller carries out the preliminary work in connection with his new office. In the meantime the members of the union will be offered work on the basis of the present award and conditions. “I cannot,” said Mr Webb, "too strongly emphasise that the control by the Government has been introduced to ensure that there is no delay in the dispatch of the ships which carry the produce so essential to the maintenance of the people of the United ■ Kingdom, and to the success of our war effort.” OVERTIME ACCEPTED WELLINGTON BACK TO NORMAL. WELLINGTON. This Day. Following on the refusal of members of the Wellington Waterside Workers’ Union to work overtime on Monday night, a decision that involved several hundred men and six or seven ships, conditions were normal yesterday. Following official advice of the settlement reached in the Auckland dispute, the Wellington men yesterday accepted orders to work overtime last night, with the exception of some 50 who had made other arrangements in the belief that Monday’s decision would still hold good.
