INFERIOR N.Z. SHEEP
PROHIBITION ORDER INADEQUATE. For the effective operation of legislation already enacted by the New. Zealand Government to restrict the export of inferior sheep to Australia, it was imperative, according to views expressed at a meeting of the New South Wales branch of the Australian Society cf Breeders of British Sheep, that unregistered. as well as registered sheep, should be brought within the scope of the scheme. Some time ago the society sought the imposition of an import duty of £2 a head on all sheep imported to Australia from the Dominion, unless accompanied by export and inspectors' certificates. The Minister for Agriculture (Mr Reid), through whom the request was made, forwarded a copy of the New Zealand Customs export prohibition order, intimating that the matter was still under consideration, and that in all probability it would be discussed at the next meeting of the Australian Agricultural Council. The committee contended that the order was not sufficiently specific, and apparently did not adequately meet the position as far as unregistered sheep wore concerned. It was decided to ask the Minister to endeavour to have the £2 import duty applied to these sheep, as well as to registered sheep.
