When Henry Ward Beecher was appointed to his first ministry at Lawrenceburg, his ardour was not dampened when he discovered the church to be very small, with a membership of only 20.0 f whom 19 were women. There was only one hymn book, and there were no lights. Henry wrote to his friends asking and to buy books. lamp and oil. and attended to the lighting himself before the services. Pithily he remarked of those days: “I did everything except come to hear myself preach!"
