Museums in America now totalled 2489. of which 1235 were natural history museums, said Dr R. A. Falla, in his presidential address to the Royal Society at Christchurch. The number included quite small "historic houses," which were preserved because of their associations with the early days of the country. The science and industrial museums included such exhibits as aeroplanes, where visitors could take the controls, start the motor. and do everything but actually fly. "Trail side" museums, found near natural attractions, containing exhibits of interest in the history j>f the localities. now numbered forty. The only one of that kind found in Now Zealand was at Waitangi. In New York alone leaflets were distributed in trains, buses and subways giving directions as to how to find seventythree museums.
