MR SUMNER WELLES

The arrival of Mr Sumner Welles in London was shorn of ceremonial. He was greeted by the United States Ambassador (Mr J. D. Kennedy) and Sir Alexander Cadogan, Permanent Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

Mr Welles, whose suite overlooks Hyde Park, rose early for a busy day. He drove from the Dorchester Hotel to the American Embassy at 9.45, where he is holding a Press conference at noon. The King gives an audience to Mr Welles at Buckingham Palace in the afternoon, after which he sees Mr Chamberlain and Lord Halifax. He will be the chief guest at a dinner party given by Lord Halifax and attended by Cabinet Ministers and some of the Opposition leaders.
